One big year defining goal, and it's here.
Happy Friday!. I wanted to share some news with you—this weekend, I'm running the Last Buckeye Standing Ultra Marathon. Running a 4.2 mile loop, every hour on the hour, until the last man is left standing (or running).
Training for this ultra marathon has been a journey. There have been early mornings, late-night runs, and countless miles that have tested my limits. But it's all been worth it. The dedication required has taught me a lot about resilience and pushing through tough times.
When I first set this goal, it felt daunting. The idea of running until you're the last one standing sounded almost impossible. But that's why I chose it. I wanted something that would push me out of my comfort zone. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions and physical challenges.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that training for a hard challenge forces you to grow. It teaches you discipline, mental toughness, and the importance of setting a routine. There were days when I didn't feel like running, but knowing I had this big goal kept me motivated. There were moments when my legs felt heavy, and my mind told me to stop, but pushing through those moments has been rewarding.
Another important lesson is understanding the importance of rest and recovery. It's easy to get caught up in the grind, but your body needs time to heal and strengthen. Balancing intense training with adequate rest has been key to staying injury-free and keeping my motivation high. It's a fine line, but learning to listen to your body is crucial.
I've also learned that having a support system can make a big difference. Whether it's friends, family, or a running group, having people who encourage and believe in you can boost your morale. There were times when I felt like giving up, and a simple pep talk or my wife showing up and joining me for a few miles made all the difference.
Setting one big yearly challenge that feels somewhat out of reach is crucial. It pushes you to go further than you thought you could. It's not just about the physical aspect—it's about proving to yourself that you can tackle anything you set your mind to. When you achieve something that once seemed impossible, it builds a sense of accomplishment and confidence that spills over into other areas of your life.
I've also found that having a big goal gives your daily routine a sense of purpose. It's easy to get lost in the monotony of everyday life, but when you have a significant challenge ahead, it adds excitement and direction. Each run, each workout session, feels like a step towards something greater. It's a constant reminder of what you're capable of achieving with determination and hard work.
Moreover, setting big goals teaches you to be adaptable. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes things don't go as planned. There were days when the weather was terrible, or I was feeling under the weather, but learning to adjust and keep moving forward was an essential part of the process. Flexibility and resilience go hand in hand when you're chasing a big dream.
Another aspect that I've come to appreciate is the mental clarity that long-distance running brings. There's something almost meditative about the rhythmic pounding of your feet on the pavement, the steady in-and-out of your breath. It's during these long runs that I've had some of my most profound thoughts and time with God. It's a time to reflect, to plan, and sometimes just to be present in the moment.
And let's not forget the power of visualization. Envisioning myself crossing the finish line, feeling that rush of accomplishment, has been a powerful motivator. Whenever I hit a rough patch, I close my eyes and picture that moment. It reminds me why I started this journey in the first place and keeps me pushing forward.
So, wish me luck this weekend! I'm confident, excited, and ready to give it my all. And if you haven't already, think about setting a big goal for yourself this year. The journey is just as rewarding as the destination. Whether it's a fitness challenge, a personal project, or a professional milestone, aim high and watch yourself rise to the occasion.
